Introduction

In essence, Functional Skills Level 1 is an equivalent qualification. Which is worth a PASS grade at SAT’s level in Maths and/or English. By receiving your level 1 qualification, you will be showing a basic understanding of Maths and/or English at a primary school level. The qualification received will open many doors for you, gaining access to high school (or equivalent education), as well as some entry-level jobs. As the qualification itself is Ofqual regulated, it will be accepted anywhere in England. So it will follow a set curriculum that is set by the government.

We at Pass Functional Skills offer 2 different Functional Skills Level 1 qualifications. In order to successfully pass and receive your well-earned qualification. You will need to ensure to do everything right, from the revision to the exam itself. In which we will be covering both in-depth.

Revision

To ensure that your revision is as thorough and as close to the exam content as possible. We have designed a Course for both Functional Skills Level 1 Maths and English. The 2 courses are based around the set government curriculum. So you can be assured that what is covered in the exam will be covered in the relevant course. Going through all of the subjects that could appear in the exam in detail. Ensuring that you have a full understanding of each topic in the curriculum. Helping to ensure that you have the best chance of passing the first time.

It also benefits from being entirely online. Meaning that the 2 courses can be taken remotely. It also benefits from having no set class times, as all learning will be done independently utilizing the different revision resources offered in the course. So you can fit the revision around your own schedule. Not having to take large chunks of time out of your day (inconveniently) in order to attend class

Exam

Now for arguably the most important part of the process to getting your Functional Skills Level 1 qualification. Overall we have 2 Level 2 exams, these being Maths and English. You will need to receive a pass grade in your chosen exam(s) in order to receive your qualification. Both exams will have different pass percentage requirements. So ensuring that you are fully repaired for all topics that could show up will be key. Each will also be formatted differently. As the Maths exam will have 2 papers. While the English has 3 parts.

Finally the exam itself. This will be the last step in you receiving your qualification. The exam itself is for either Maths or English, and passing either will gain you a PASS in Functional Skills Level 1 Maths/English.

FAQ

How do the Functional Skills exams work?

The Functional Skills exams are done completely online! On the day of your exam you will be sent an email with an invite to a zoom call with your invigilator. Once you open the link the invigilator will walk you through the rest. We can send you mock papers as well in order to help you prepare and get used to how the exam setup works

How long does the Maths exam last?

The Maths exam is split into 2 sections, the Non-Calculator and the Calculator exams, the Non-Calculator exam is 30 minutes and the Calculator exam is 1 hour and 30 minutes.

How long does the English exam last?

The Functional Skills English exam consists of 3 sections, the Reading exam, the Writing exam and the Speaking, Listening and Communication exam (SLC). The Reading and the Writing exams both only take 1 hour to complete, and are sat back to back. The SLC is 1 hour and 30 minutes and is on a separate day.

What is the pass mark for the exam?

There isn't an exact number that can be given for the pass mark as it varies between which exam is taken, but the average is between 50%-55% to pass.

What if I need to resit?

If you need to resit your Functional Skills exam, we have a support team to help you go through this process! Feel free to contact them or book the resit yourself.

Is your course relevant to "Exam Board"?

Yes, the course has been designed in accordance to the government's maths level 1 curriculum which guarantees it is relevant to your exam board.

How much studying do you recommend?

We recommend the average learner does between 45-50 hours of studying before their exam. However every learner learns at a different pace so feel free to use it for as long as you think is necessary.

Is it possible to book my exam separately?

Yes it is. You are able to book your exam separately from purchasing the course, however we recommend you purchase them together as you will get a discount on your total.

Aside from the course itself, we also provide learners with practice papers, past papers, revision cards and even tutoring sessions!
